Gandhi in Colour

A collection of handtufted woollen rugs inspired by a series of evocative Indian photos. The photos document Mahatma Gandhi’s famous ‘Salt March’ of 1930 through Indian villages, in protest at the government’s high tax on salt. Black and white photographs of Gandhi’s ‘Salt March’ were the inspiration. On one hand they were monochrome images of figures against a white ground, very picturesque; on the other, these groups of figures in motion created abstract patterns. The images were reimagined in bright, Indian tones. The rugs are designed in Italy by Nuala and produced in Jaipur, India.

Inspiration includes the Dalai Lama’s statement “the true Buddhist thinks and believes abstract”, a construct with resonance for these abstract patterns.
